Polestar's US exit is not a commercial setback in the ordinary sense; it is a forced regulatory severance that removes the company from its most visible Western proof-of-concept market. The denial of special authorization means Polestar no longer has a legal pathway to sell new vehicles in the US under its current ownership structure. That commits the company to a binary: restructure ownership in a way that satisfies Commerce Department criteria, or redirect all North American commercial infrastructure toward other markets. Neither option is operationally neutral, and neither was on the table before this ruling.
