Xsolla's role here is not simply a payment processor bolt-on. Serving as Merchant of Record means absorbing the full compliance and tax liability surface of Skich's transaction layer. VAT remittance, cross-border consumer protection obligations, chargebacks, and the regulatory exposure that comes with operating under the EU Digital Markets Act on iOS. Skich retains the discovery and distribution problem; Xsolla owns the legal and financial standing in each market. That is a structurally different commitment than API-level payment facilitation, and it binds Xsolla's compliance infrastructure directly to the pace at which alternative storefronts can scale developer acquisition. The related signals set is thin on direct comparables, the 12 partnership signals we tracked over the relevant period are largely unrelated (brand ambassadors, infrastructure JVs, sports venue deals). The more useful frame is the regulatory one: Google Play's mandated openness to alternative US app stores by mid-2026, alongside Android's simplified sideloading process, is compressing the window in which alternative marketplace operators need payments and compliance infrastructure locked. Xsolla's move positions it ahead of that opening rather than after it. Companies operating at the intersection of alternative distribution and regulated payments commerce face concentrated demand for functional leadership in regulatory operations (multi-jurisdiction tax and consumer law), commercial partnership development with developer communities, and product capability at the seam between marketplace tooling and payment infrastructure, specifically teams that can translate compliance complexity into developer-facing simplicity at speed.
